A supervised residence is yet another option run by a group of people. The individuals managing the location are licensed professionals, though this licensing differs from one area to the next. A final form is a service provider, which is more like an institutional provider.

Our sober living takes guys out to eat randomly to bond, or even white water rafting. Every year we do something around Christmas to give back to the community. All with at least one year of sobriety, the house managers show a commitment to working a 12-step program in their daily lives, and demonstrate through their actions that they can lead by example. He went through extended primary treatment, a halfway house, sober house, and the apartment that started the network of sober houses that Callan runs today. He found that by sharing his story with newcomers that he was able to touch lives and help others, just as he had been helped when new to recovery. The National Alliance for Recovery Residences is an organization that aims to educate on sober living homes while also providing support for those running them. One of the ways it has done so is to create what it calls a recovery residence — a single term that represents transitional living.

This level of care is higher, though not formally the same thing as an intensive inpatient treatment program. If someone is unable to work initially, due to a lack of experience, there may be some help in building skills to do so. Individuals are often responsible for helping with meals, taking care of the home and maintaining relationships. Stepping Stones staff work closely with new residents and support the needs of all housing units. We rely heavily on peer support specialists – these are persons who are recovering themselves and have been through training on drug tests, leading groups, and connecting residents to local resources. Each house  democratically elects a house president, who assists with leading meetings, intake of new residents, and reporting to Stepping Stones staff in the case of an issue.
